Step 1: |
|
Find Suitable Candidates
Please reach out to the clients you are already assisting to assess if there is a potential for them to apply for food stamps and ask these clients if they are willing to try our online application with your assistance.
All Massachusetts residents may apply for food stamps using the online application.
|
Step 2: |
|
Estimate Eligibility
Look at Income Limits
If clients are unsure whether they might qualify for food stamps, help them determine whether they are likely eligible and their potential benefit amount. First, take a look at food stamp income limits to see if they fall below the limit. (Note: Clients may fall below the limit but still not be eligible for food stamps because they also have low expenses or, in some cases, have too much in assets.)
Use the Online Calculator
If they do fall below the limit or look close, it is worth it to use the online calculator to estimate eligibility.
|
Step 3: |
|
Complete the Application
Complete the application with the client
Complete the application for the client, with him/her working through the questions at your side.
Log Client Contact Info
Keep a log of each client to use for follow up purposes.
Fax Verifications
Once you have completed the application, fax any verifications the client has brought with them to the appropriate DTA office. Click here to search for DTA offices and their corresponding contact information.
Make Copies
Make copies of the completed application (if paper) or the application summary (if done online). Print a copy of the verification checklist and make a notation of any verifications not yet submitted.

Step 4: |
|
Follow Up With Client as Needed
Please follow up with clients. Keep a file of their contact information and contact them within 2 to 3 weeks to make sure that the process is on track. To the extent that they are willing, have your client fill out and sign the Authorized Representative form. You will only need to fill out your name, telephone number and agency name on the form.
