How do I apply?

Apply Online!

Now there are two ways to apply online. The Virtual Gateway Food Stamp Application, a web-based service introduced by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, enables community agencies, health centers, and other social service agencies to assist their clients in applying for food stamps online. If you would like help applying online, See a partial list of agencies by clicking here.

Any Massachusetts resident can now apply online from home, a library, school or work, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week whenever it's most convienient for them. Applicants will be directed to complete a simple screening form to estimate eligibility. You can also estimate eligibility on this website by using our simple to use eligibility calculator. The food stamp application can then be completed and sent electronically to the local DTA office where it is processed. In a few days, a DTA worker will contact the applicant to schedule an interview and request certain documents. To find the online application, go to www.mass.gov/dta and under "Key Resources" click "Apply Online".

Project Bread can still help you assist clients in applying for Food Stamps. Our website, www.gettingsnap.org, is an excellent way to screen clients, using the website's calculator or just call our toll-free FoodSource Hotline at 1-800-645-8333.

You will be assigned a caseworker when your application is received by DTA. This is the person you will work with until your application is complete. Your caseworker is the person you should call when you have questions about your account. And if you need to provide new documents to DTA in the future, you should give them to this same caseworker. For example, if you change jobs, you will need to send your caseworker new copies of your pay stubs.

If you are getting emergency food stamps, DTA must give you food stamps no later than 7 days after they receive your application.

If you are getting regular SNAP, DTA must give you food stamps no later than 30 days after they receive your application.
